The Lost Forest in northern Minnesota remains because of an original survey error in 1892. The old growth pines are now preserved, as The Lost Forty, a Scientific and Natural Area within the Chippewa National Forest due to sleuthing among the old maps and notes in the 1950's.
"If you were trying to turn this rollicking land into straight lines on paper, you might make a mistake. Josiah King did."
Here is the original illustration by Betsy, an acrylic painting on paper, 8 x 12 inches, that was used in The Lost Forest, by Phyllis Root, University of Minnesota Press, 2016.
