Original illustration from The Lost Forest, page 21

The Lost Forest in northern Minnesota remains because of an original survey error in 1892.  The old growth pines are now preserved, as The Lost Forty, a Scientific and Natural Area within the Chippewa National Forest due to sleuthing among the old maps and notes in the 1950's. " ... the map showed [the Lost Forty] as a lake. There was no profit in lake water, so that forest stayed lost, and those tall trees kept growing." Here is the original illustration by Betsy, an acrylic painting on paper, 8 x 12 inches, that was used in The Lost Forest, by Phyllis Root, University of Minnesota Press, 2016.
