The Lost Forest in northern Minnesota remains because of an original survey error in 1892. The old growth pines are now preserved, as The Lost Forty, a Scientific and Natural Area within the Chippewa National Forest due to sleuthing among the old maps and notes in the 1950's.
" ... the map showed [the Lost Forty] as a lake. There was no profit in lake water, so that forest stayed lost, and those tall trees kept growing."
Here is the original illustration by Betsy, an acrylic painting on paper, 8 x 12 inches, that was used in The Lost Forest, by Phyllis Root, University of Minnesota Press, 2016.
