The Lost Forest in northern Minnesota remains because of an original survey error in 1892.  The old growth pines are now preserved, as The Lost Forty, a Scientific and Natural Area within the Chippewa National Forest due to sleuthing among the old maps and notes in the 1950's. " Then, in 1958, someone (probably a forest ranger) noticed those tall trees ..." Here is the original illustration by Betsy, an acrylic painting on paper, 6 x 16 inches, that was used in The Lost Forest, by Phyllis Root, University of Minnesota Press, 2016.
